Pricing Policy
What a Kivu transfer costs, and how that cost may change · Effective August 25, 2026
This policy states what a Kivu transfer costs, how the cost is calculated, and the conditions under which it can change. It applies to every customer and every transfer. It is published here so that it can be read before you send, checked after you send, and held against us if we ever depart from it.
1. The commitment
Kivu's customer rate is the National Bank of Rwanda (BNR) reference selling rate, reduced by 0.99%. There is no transfer fee. That 0.99% is your entire cost of using Kivu.
- One price, disclosed. The distance between the BNR reference selling rate and the Kivu rate is the only thing you pay. Kivu charges no transfer fee, no fixed charge, and no percentage on top of the spread.
- Both rates are shown. The BNR reference rate and the Kivu rate are displayed side by side, so the 0.99% is visible rather than described.
- The quoted rate is the applied rate. The rate you are shown at quotation is the rate used for your transfer, held for 30 minutes from quotation. If you confirm within that window, the figure you saw is the figure applied. No rate is substituted after you confirm.
- The recipient's amount is shown before you pay. The exact amount that will reach your recipient is displayed before you confirm, not estimated afterwards.
2. How this price can change
The 0.99% spread is a published figure, not an internal setting. Changing it is a public act, and it follows a fixed procedure.
- Announcement comes first. The spread cannot change without a prior public announcement on this website, posted before the new figure takes effect. The announcement will state the new figure and the date it begins to apply.
- Changes are never retroactive. A transfer quoted or in progress under the previous figure completes under the previous figure. A new spread applies only to transfers quoted on or after its stated effective date.
- The record is permanent. Our rate history page publishes the BNR reference rate and the Kivu rate for every business day. A change to the spread is therefore visible in the record itself, and not only in the announcement that preceded it. The record stays published; it is not reset when the price changes.
- Silence is not a mechanism. Kivu does not reserve a right to adjust the spread quietly, to vary it by customer, or to apply a different figure to a transfer than the one published on the day it was quoted.
This policy states in full the pricing commitment summarized in section 4 of our Terms of Service. Where the two describe the same commitment, they are intended to be read together.
3. What the BNR reference rate means
- BNR is the National Bank of Rwanda, Rwanda's central bank, which publishes reference exchange rates.
- Kivu prices against the reference selling rate, which is the highest of the reference rates BNR publishes for the day, rather than a lower one. Our customer rate is calculated from that figure.
- Rates update each business day. When BNR publishes a new reference rate for a business day, Kivu's customer rate is recalculated from it the same day. Outside business days, the most recently published rate remains in effect until BNR publishes the next one.
- You can check the source yourself. BNR publishes its reference rates at bnr.rw/exchangeRate. Nothing in this policy asks you to take Kivu's word for the reference figure.
4. Delivery and payout fees
Kivu charges no fee to send. Separately from Kivu's own pricing, a payout channel may apply a charge of its own.
- Where a payout fee applies, whether from a mobile money operator or a receiving bank, it is disclosed on the quote screen before you confirm, together with the exact amount your recipient will receive after it has been applied.
- Nothing is deducted silently. A payout-side fee is never taken out of the recipient's amount without having been shown to you first. If a fee applies, you see it and the net figure before you pay.
- The figure you approve is the figure delivered. The recipient's amount shown at confirmation already accounts for any disclosed payout fee.
5. Effective date and updates
This policy is effective August 25, 2026, and replaces any earlier description of Kivu's pricing.
This policy may be updated. Material changes will be announced on this website before they take effect, and the effective date above will be updated to match. A change to the 0.99% spread is always a material change, and follows the procedure in section 2 of this policy.
